Looking to get hired or promoted? These days, recruiters and employers are very keen on hiring top talents and in this modern era, it’s not enough to rely on your credentials to snag that job or climb up the corporate ladder.
Those applying for jobs will have to do more than craft an outstanding CV. You need to also make sure your online presence is just as impressive because recruiters put a lot of weight on an applicant’s social media.
In fact, according to a study conducted by CareerBuilder, 70% of employers look at candidates’ social media profiles.
Among the primary reasons employers hired a candidate based on their social networking site were: candidate’s background information supported their professional qualifications (38%), great communication skills (37%), a professional image (36%), and creativity (35%).
So what do employers look for in your profiles? The survey states the following as good signs to hire:
- Information that supports their qualifications for the job (61%)
- If the candidate has a professional online persona at all (50%)
- What other people are posting about the candidates (37%)
- For any reason at all not to hire a candidate (24%)
Be mindful of photos you post on your profiles, making sure they are, at the very least, decent.
Employers decided not to hire applicants due to the following reasons:
- Candidate posted provocative or inappropriate photographs, videos or information: 39%
- Candidate posted information about them drinking or using drugs: 38%
- Candidate had discriminatory comments related to race, gender or religion: 32%
- Candidate bad-mouthed their previous company or fellow employee: 30%
- Candidate lied about qualifications: 27%
- Candidate had poor communication skills: 27%
- Candidate was linked to criminal behavior: 26%
- Candidate shared confidential information from previous employers: 23%
- Candidate’s screen name was unprofessional: 22%
- Candidate lied about an absence: 17%
- Candidate posted too frequently: 17%
Before you post something, ask yourself if it is something you’d want your boss to see.
So what should you do? Rappler shares the following tips:
- Don’t rant about work online
- Aim to be grammatically correct
- Post photos that you consider professional (or at the very least, decent)
- Hide friends’ comments that you deem inappropriate
Furthermore, you need to be mindful of how you P.O.S.T. on social.
Be Purposeful. Before you hit “Publish” ask yourself: Is this something you would want your boss to read? If the answer is ‘no’ then don’t post it. Don’t rant about work online; be grammatically correct; post photos that are, at the very least, decent; and hide inappropriate comments on your posts.
Be Objective. Think before you comment or engage in (heated) discussions online, making sure that you consider where the other party is coming from. Refrain from comments that result from emotional outbursts.
Be Selfless. Don’t make it all about you. Selfies are fine but don’t overdo it. Look at your profile as an avenue to do good. Avoid the tendency to be self-centered.
Be Trustworthy. Be credible. Make sure that everything you post online is verified.
This is our reality today. Social media has become so ingrained in our lives it’s hard not to live our lives through it. While you have all the freedom to use your online profiles however you want, it pays to be mindful of its future repercussions. Pause before you post.
