CPA Australia Inspires TOA Global’s Senior Accountants

CPA Australia leaders visited TOA Global Manila in July 2024

With technological innovations driving change in global business, the world needs more accountants to step up as strategic advisers and “savvy financial translators.”

CPA Australia’s Don Poh, Business Development Manager for Emerging Markets, recently visited TOA Global in Manila for an information session, where he encouraged more accountants to pursue the prestigious certification that the group offers.

With about 172,000 members across 100 countries, the association counts more than 28,000 professionals who have risen to senior leadership roles after completing the CPA Australia Program.

Among CPA Australia’s members in the Philippines is the current Ambassador to the Philippines Yu Hae Kyong. Before joining the embassy in Manila in July 2022, her highly accomplished career included more than a decade each in the Treasury and the Australian Taxation Office.

Two days before the information session, CPA Australia were the guests of honor in a special dinner at the ambassador’s residence, which TOA Global Founder and Chairman Nick Sinclair and CEO Jeremy Clements attended, along with TOA Global Vice President for People Experience Operations Chona Caballero.

“We’re excited about the office visits and specialised programs in collaboration with CPA Australia,” Nick said. “Such initiatives are crucial as they equip our professionals with the latest skills and knowledge, enabling them to thrive in a dynamic global market.”

Rowena Buddee, CPA Australia’s Chief of Global Member Experience, and Nicklaus Wee, their Regional Manager for Emerging Markets, also visited TOA Global Manila, one of seven offices in key Philippine cities where TOA Global’s accountants work.

In a statement made in late 2022, CPA Australia Chief Executive Andrew Hunter stated that “A shortage of accountants has broad implications for the economy… Tough economic times mean accountants are in huge demand but the homegrown supply of accounting and finance professionals falls far short of meeting this demand.” As one of the mid-term solutions Andrew pointed to the pressing need for an increased focus on training.

Practical experience is a must with CPA Australia

“When you pursue a CPA Australia designation, you will equip yourself with real-life examples that will guide you when you face similar situations in your career,” Don said. “It’s a holistic learning experience.”

“We will encourage your continuous development so you will maintain your designation as a CPA Australia member and move up the ladder to your next position.”

Participants in the CPA Australia program have six years to complete and pass exams in four foundation subjects, plus courses in Economics and Markets and Fundamentals of Business Law, and 36 months of practical experience. Many complete it within three years, Don said.

"I am continually impressed by the exceptional accounting talent we have in the Philippines. With the CPA Australia program visiting our accountants, we are thrilled to offer an incredible opportunity for our team to enhance their skills and career trajectories. Australian firms will greatly benefit from the dedication, expertise, and global perspective our Filipino accountants bring, especially as they gain further qualifications and insights through this prestigious program. This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to fostering professional growth and international excellence."
